Peter’s experience: Day 1

I just had my vasectomy done today, about 6 hours ago. I came upon this website just several days ago and had made my appointment to have the procedure done several weeks ago. My wife and I have 2 lovely daughters and came to the conclusion that we were blessed enough. I am 38 and my wife is 35. We don’t need any more surprises and look forward to enjoying ourselves without fear of growing the family.

Well, the procedure today was somewhat intimidating. I am somewhat disappointed in myself for not “quizzing” my doctor as much as many of you on this site suggest. For anyone considering this procedure, take everyone’s advice. I went into my procedure knowing much about it because of this website. Now, in the days to come, I can anticipate some of the things that I may encounter. Should I not encounter them, I will be thankful. However, if I do, at least I have a point of reference to go on.

Well, back to the procedure. I was blessed to have my procedure done in an ambulatory surgical center. My entire procedure was done in an operating room. It was quite pleasant and I was glad to see all of the support staff and nurses assisting. I was expecting just my doctor and one other nurse, instead there were 3 nurses and my doctor. After I got on to the operating table, and they hooked me up to all of the support items for vital statistics, the doc prepared me for the procedure. Now, I wasn’t told or given the option of shaving my area before the procedure. My doctor informed me that he would be doing this, but didn’t say I could do it. In reflecting on this, I’m glad he did it because he “trimmed” the area compared to what I would have done. I probably would have shaved the whole area. But, he dry shaved me, and that hurt!

Based on what I have read from some other guy’s stories, I pretty much could anticipate the rest of the procedure. But, I must say that without a doubt, the most painful part of the procedure was the needle he stuck me with for the local anesthesia. It was no prick, it was downright painful. After the shot, I couldn’t feel anything, just some pressure. When he finished with the right side, he gave me another shot in my left sac and it hurt worse! Thank goodness for the nurse next to me for letting me squeeze her hand. After that, he finished up without any further pain. Afterward, I felt lightheaded but OK.

I know that many guys say to bring a jock strap or snug underwear, and I had mine with me prepared to do the same. However, my doctor provided me with a jock strap and bandaged me up in gauze. All in all, I would say that I was quite pampered, all things considered. I credit this to the facility I went to.

Oh well, it’s only the first day. But I hope that my experience can help someone else understand what they may be heading to. I most certainly don’t regret having the procedure and I know that what I am feeling is only a fraction of the discomfort that my wife went through. If you have children, and you are satisfied with the number of kids you have, don’t hesitate to do this, at least for your wife’s sake.
