Tom’s experience: Childfree vasectomy

Having been married for 13 years and childless and getting ready to turn 40 my wife and I made the decision that one of us had to do something to take the anxiety out of maybe getting pregnant. I brought having a vasectomy because it was easier for me to go through sterilization than to have her go through it.

I talked with one of my associates who had just had it done and what he went through. We decided to use his urologist and I made the appointment.

The consultation

The initial consultation had to be attended by my wife and me and when the doctor had explained the procedure and was confident that it was what we wanted and had thought about it for some time scheduled the procedure. The appointment and drop your drawers exam and consent forms took about 30 minutes. He explained to me to wear normal briefs and shave from about 1″ above and all the scrotal hair.

The procedure

On the day of the procedure, I took a 10 mg valium tablet he gave me about 30 minutes before my appointment. When we got to the office I was taken back to the room and asked to remove my slacks and underwear. I then laid down on the exam table and waited for the doctor. When the doctor came in we talked for a while while he filled the syringe with the needed local. Two small needle sticks and I felt nothing. The procedure took 20 minutes and I was on my way home. I iced each side for 20 minutes each for 2 hours on the first day and soaked in a warm bath for 20 minutes 3 times a day for 2 days. Some swelling was present and bruising but it went away in about 2 weeks.

Advice

Make sure you take it easy for two days afterward. I did not and even though there was only mild discomfort I would have been a lot better off. Our sex life took up in 2 weeks and is better now that we don’t have to worry anymore.
