Introduction

Decades ago surgeons performed vasectomy for several purposes. Normal adults had vasectomy to prevent pregnancies. Others had Vasectomy for Rejuvenation, to improve their Virility, Libido, general health and moods. Vasectomy was routinely performed to prevent ascending urinary tract infection, after suprapubic prostatectomy and GU tract tubercular disease.

Vasectomy was also performed in some parts of the world to prevent children being born of criminals and mentally deranged persons, where laws existed to that effect.

In the early studies of Vasectomy, carried out by several surgeons, a large number after uneventful Vasectomy, reported great improvement in virility, Libido, health & a happier state of mind. Steinache and many others believed, that the Testosterone levels in the body increased due to suppressed spermatogenesis after vasectomy, which lead to proliferation of Leydig cells in the testis and increased testosterone levels. To further improve on the rejuvenation results, Steinache ligated between Epididymis and testis. This technique was named Steinache ii operation. Those who followed Steinache and performed vasectomy to improve the virility were known as Rejuvenators.

In the early fifties there was a growing awareness to the problem of sudden acceleration in population growth. The word sex was taboo. Even though little was talked about sex, but much sex was practiced - how else did the population figures jump up so sharply?

In those years efforts were being made by NGO’s and Government agencies to check the menace of sudden and fast growing population. Measures taken in India to check the population growth in those years, a brief is in the paper THE UNSOLVED PROBLEM OF POPULATION published in JIMA Feb.1962

At that time all the emphasis was on contraceptives for females. Men feared vasectomy. Many didn’t know Sterilisation from Castration.

Also at that time I was studying for post-graduation in surgery. Research on a subject & thesis was the norm. My choice of subject was MALE STERILISATION AND ITS EFFECTS. This research was carried out between 1952-1954, and the results were compiled in a Thesis. Other papers published during the next twenty years are in here. Lastly the Research, which is proposed in 2003, is included along with this.

VASECTOMY RESEARCH SHOULD CONTINUE
To study the subject of Vasectomy and to verify the claims made by Steinache and others, a project was set up in 1952 at the Medical College Indore (M.P. India) Clinical follow up of Vasectomy cases over a specific period and Experimental study on rats for histological studies of the testis before and after Vasectomy. The results of this study were compiled in a Thesis in 1954. Observations made from this study were in conformity with the claims by Steinache & other surgeons. At the end of the above study realization came that this study should include Testosterone evaluation before and after Vasectomy. But in those years laboratories didn’t have facility for such investigations so it could not be pursued.

Things have changed since. Laboratories do have facilities for Free Testosterone LH & FSH estimation and more. Andro-Pause, Male-Menopause and Male Hormone Replacement Therapy is the hot topic currently, widely recommended & practiced, Andrologists are advocating Male hormone replacement therapy for Ando-Pause, (also known as male-menopause). It is just like HRT for menopause in women. It’s an irony that after decades of HRT for female menopause there is a scare about after-effects of HRT. Gynecologists and patients alike are having second thoughts about HRT. It will not surprise any one if after some time HRT in men will meet the same fate. There are already known fears of side effects of therapy, which includes Prostate cancer, Liver / Kidney damage, Gynaecomastia (Male Breast enlargement) and even stroke (with Testosterone injection).

Hormones in HRT are not natural hormones produced by the body. Hormonal studies (Bio-available or Free Testosterone, LH. & FSH) the investigations are now done in Laboratories, which were not available till some years ago. Such hormonal studies before & after Vasectomy (as was suggested in 1954) will help establish Rejuvenation effects of Vasectomy. Results of the suggested research will meet the needs of those looking for safe and sure ways for dealing with the Andropause. It will also help people and the nations in their efforts for population control, and solve much neglected, malignant problem of population explosion world over more so in the poor under developed countries. This study is suggested and will hopefully be done simultaneously in India and Canada. This project should be based in the Government Research Institutes, dedicated to research on Reproduction & Health.
