Picking the best sperm for IVF
From Pamela:-
I have read many different studies and still not found the answer to my question. So I am hoping you can help. Many years ago, my boyfriend has a vasectomy for medical reasons. After testing, it was found that his sperm was “unhealthly”, and the chances as him having a ‘normal’ child were extremely low. Is there any way to do IVF and somehow get only the healthy sperms??
“Unhealthy” is not a term used to characterize sperm or is it universally used to understand the quality of sperm. The presence of any motile sperm in the ejaculate is adequate to undergo IVF/ICSI. Couples who undergo IVF/ICSI only need to have as many motile sperm as there are eggs retrieved from the female (usually 10-14 eggs). The embryologist performing the ICSI procedure will usually choose the best moving sperm, however, this does not ensure that the sperm are free from any genetic defects or will go on to develop a healthy embryo.
