Would Staph infection affect sperm count post vasectomy?

From Trish:-
After reading about what you told Don with only one cut, I started thinking about my husbands vasectomy. He only had one, then soon after he got a really bad staph infection making him stay in the hospital for days. After the swelling went down (they looked like baseballs, very large) he went home and again did not do anything for a couple of weeks. When he sent in his first test he still had some sperm count, I really am unsure of the amount at this time. We never really went back for anymore counts. What are the odds that he might be fertile? Would the staph infection have anything to do with it? Should we be concerned? It has been a little over a year.

The technique by which the vasectomy was performed has little relation to the development of a Staph infection post-procedure. Likewise, the development of a Staph infection has little to do with having persistent sperm in the ejaculate after a vasectomy. The most common reason that vasectomies fail is that patients do not follow-up with their physicians for the “all-clear” prior to having unprotected intercourse. All it takes is one motile sperm to get a woman pregnant and the practice of not following up with a physician is equivalent to playing reproductive Russian Roulette.
