Had my vasectomy 24 hours ago

I have been a visitor to this site for sometime. Many of you have helped me in making the decision to have a vasectomy by answering my questions and reassuring me that everything will go well. Just wanted to let you guys know that it is now 24 hours since my NSV and it did indeed go extremely well.

I had my consult at the beginning of summer and scheduled the procedure for the Labor Day holiday weekend.( a 4 day weekend in the US). My doc who is also my age(42) was very helpful in answering my questions, he fully described what he was going to do. He even shared with me that he was planning to have the procedure done this summer as well.( He has 4 kids).

On the morning of surgery(yesterday 9/1/06) I took 10mg of Valium as prescribed by my doc 45 mins before the procedure. I had shaved myself the night before as directed. Now, this was my big fear...the nurse had me undress in the pre-op area an put on a hospital gown. She escorted me to the operating room and had me get on the table. I was fearful that if she prepped me, that "Mr. Happy' would start moving and growing if you guys know what I mean. Many of you assured me that it wouldn't and it didn't. Actually the nurse left me covered on the table and my doc came in the room alone. He washed my scrotum with the pre-op solution, placed drapes around my legs and over my penis. Only the scrotum was exposed. The valium help tremendously in relaxing me. So guys ask for it.

As he started the procedure, he told me everything he was going to do. He gave both sides of my sac a tug to find the cords/vas. He placed a rubber clamp around them so he could give the injection. The tugging was the only pressure I felt and it was not bad. You can feel it a little in your lower abs but only a little. He then gave me three little injections, which I barely noticed. Two were to numb the cords and the third was for the opening. He then used the hemostat and made a small opening below the base of my penis in the midline of the scrotum. As I said, he was talking with me the entire time. He told me that he had his vasectomy done three months ago by his partner in his practice and he did just fine. Then he said "guess what...I'm finished".

He helped me get off the table and put on my jock strap for support. Gave me a few instructions. Mainly that I would need to have 16 or 20 ejaculations before I could expect to be clear. He said he was bringing his sample in soon to be tested. Then the nurse took me back to the post-op area where my wife was waiting. They gave me a prescription for pain meds which I will say that after 24hours I have not taken any.(Only a few anti-inflamatories to keep the swelling done.) I came home and did not move from my sofa all day until bedtime. I kept the frozen bag of peas on "the boys' all day and even during the night.

I have not had any swelling or bruising. Only a little sore when I move around today. I am currently on the sofa with my peas and plan to stay here all day.

I just want to conclude by saying that I am very thankful for this site and all those who participate. It makes it so much easier when you can ask others about their experience with the same thing you are going through. I would encourage you guys who are thinking of this to not delay. Find a good doc. I can't say enough for my doc. Super guy!! Just do what he says for the pre and post op. Now I can't wait to get the all clear. No more condoms!!!! I told my wife that as soon as the word comes that I am clear, we are going to have a four day weekend away from the kids and put this procedure to good use. LOL Thanks again all,
