"Childfree vasectomy experience"
I had begun considering a childfree life at 19 or 20. At some point, it became serious, so I decided a vasectomy was the best choice for me. I spent a year of intense introspection, asking myself every day, if I had to get the procedure that day, whether or not I would do it. After going 365 to 0 in favor of the vasectomy, I began to check the internet for information regarding procedures, doctors, and potential challenges to my decision. I created a four page "manifesto" on why I wanted to remain childfree, including quotes and arguments taken from the homepage of the American Urological Association. My insurance provider changed three times from when I first sought out a doctor to perform the surgery; during that time, I had seen three different urologists. All three were willing to do it, without a problem. I finally got it done in Feb 2001, at 23 years of age. Chances are, if there was any doubt in their minds, that four page document put them at ease.
Getting a vasectomy is by no means a decision that should be made lightly, or on the spur of the moment. For those of you in the younger age bracket, make it clear to the doctor that you have thought it out, and that you are aware of the permanence of the decision. Not all doctors will do it for you, but if you are persistent enough, you will find one that will.
