"Vasectomy is an excellent choice for someone who has reached the point in their life that they do not want any further children. In my case it was my wife's health , I did not want to risk her life and I will be sixty-five when my youngest reaches 21 year old. The more prepared you are for the procedure the better you will do with it. It was my time to say farewell to fatherhood and I have no regrets."

Biker's story details his thoughts and fears the day before his vasectomy, and he talks about how the procedure itself went.

"The reality of what was going to take place didn't really sink in until yesterday morning, after I shaved. I actually did start to get nervous. Now my vasectomy is done, and so far I'm feeling fine. Afterwards, he showed me the little bits he'd removed -- longer than I'd expected, maybe one inch. He said I should not bike or run for at least a week, and after that I could do it if it felt okay. I then walked gingerly out to my wife in the waiting room. She was pleasantly surprised that I could walk, she thought I might need a wheelchair or something! We got into the car, I immediately stuck a pack of frozen peas down my shorts, and we went home."

This story is very detailed, and spans 18 months from the consideration to a year after the procedure, and has several twists and turns to it.

The story starts:- "After due consideration, I hit the internet. What I discovered floored me. I had always heard that a vasectomy was a safe and simple procedure with little risk. We obtained copies of medical journal articles, reviews, and studies. I spent hours reading them, and searching further on the internet. I never found what I considered to be "good" answers. So, I had to weigh the risk in another fashion. I decided that the risk of complications, both medical and financial of a pregnancy out-weighed the possible risks to my health."

He concludes:- "I remain totally amazed at how well this has turned-out for me, as even under the best of circumstances I expected to experience some measure of discomfort, but there was absolutely none. To this day I remain 100-percent convinced that this was the correct decision for me to make. It is a decision that everyone has to make for himself - I will share my story, but I will not try to convince anyone to do as I have. I guess the fact that I don't even think about it any more tells you quite a bit. Never had any problems, never had any pain or other after effects. Other than a few "positives" on the tests, everything has gone exceeding well. "

Updated

Titled "Now will you shut up about the episiotomy?". Chris lives in the Netherlands, and wondered if he would practice his language skills during the procedure or not! He concludes:- "No one at work has even guessed. I'm actually dying to tell someone to maybe get some sympathy - and it's always good to steer the conversation around to your genitals, but I don't know how to broach the subject. My 3 year old son is broadcasting to anyone who'll listen that "Daddy's got a sore willy" - after that you WANT to tell them it's not that kind of sore willy, it's only a vasectomy!"

Christopher #2
Added March 12, 2006

Christopher's story starts the night before his vasectomy, and follows through to the recovery. "Struggling right now with the decision to tell the kids - both girls, 9 and 13. Not sure how they will react to this news. Probably with a shoulder shrug, hope you're OK, can I have the remote now Dad? It wasn't nearly as bad of a procedure as I had built up in my mind - stirrups, scalpels, cute nurses all standing around looking at me in all my glory was what I was certain I was in for. But it was actually quite easy. Aside from the humbling experience of being completely naked from the waist down in front of someone other than my wife, it was kind of funny."

Dan says:- "All in all, not too bad" in summarising his experience. He did the shaving the night before but "the nurse informed me that I should have been told to shave my entire groin! She, of course, had to bring in a couple other nurses to confirm I was still too hairy. She clipped and shaved for 20 minutes, still not removing all the hair. She was using admittedly cheap razors and cold water - "sorry, the water doesn't get hot back here"! My testicles had almost gone internal by the time she was finished." Some encouraging words about the use of the jockstrap in during recovery too!

Dan #5
Added September 24, 2005

"The initial visit took about five minutes. The doctor wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. After explaining that I was forty, married sixteen years, and had two kids, he dispensed with the formalities, described the surgery, told me to show up clean-shaven and with a jock strap. I was back in the saddle after a week. Just take it easy and don't push yourself. All in all, the whole thing was no big deal and well worth it. I'm like a kid with a new toy."

Added March 9, 2008

"I didn't think I would ever have the need for a vasectomy. We tried for 6 years to have children using all means possibly and spending around $40,000 in the process. After deciding it just wasn't in God's plans for us to have children we stopped trying. Within a couple of weeks my wife was pregnant with our son. When my mom passed away and me being an only child I didn't want my son to have to go through that experience and we decided to try for a second child. The very first try my wife was pregnant with our daughter. That led me to consider the vasectomy since I am now older and facing several health issues. We just felt we were extremely blessed and didn't want to risk another pregnancy later on in life."

"I used your site extensively prior to my vasectomy and would like to put in my experience to hopefully help others. I believe there is an adverse selection problem when it comes to reading personal stories on vasectomy because most people only want to write about it if they've had problems. I haven't had any problems and I want others to know that it can be absolutely fine. I don't view myself as one of the lucky ones because we are in the majority. I view those that have problems as the unlucky ones as they are by far in the minority and this is a fact that often gets overlooked and leads to a lot of anxiety unnecessarily."

Detailed story about the reasons for vasectomy and how the procedure went. "Several times over the last 11 years my wife suggested a vasectomy, to which I told her to go take a long walk off a short pier. I eventually came to the decision to have a vasectomy on my own. I am going to be 39 years old this June and during my wife's last OB-GYN visit she was told that having another child would be dangerous for her. I always felt cheated that I didn't have a Dad who was able to be my coach or be an active father - he was physically unable to do the things that some of the younger dads could do. So my age was also a factor in my decision. I did not want to be an old Dad. I wanted to have it done and be healed up in time to coach my son's baseball team this spring, so I made my appointment for January 6, 2006."

"31 days to go". Richard had a varicocele and aches and pains in the testicles/groin area. He had to decide if he was to have a vasectomy or not. His story is in the form of a diary and concentrates on the decision, the build up to his scheduled date. Will he or won't he??? Well, he did eventually, and the updates he has added since deal with the "all clear" and a post op granuloma several months afterwards.

Richard updates his story three years after his vasectomy. "The freedom from worry has been truly liberating for both of us and has contributed to a better sex life....we're closer then ever, we're exploring each other's fantasies, and we're doing it more often-wherever, whenever we can. I've even had my penis pierced and now sport a very sexy Prince Albert (Sorry if that makes you guys who are recovering from surgery a bit squeamish). So as I approach the 3rd anniversary of my vasectomy I am a "Happy Camper" as they say...better sex, more sex, no worries...I couldn't have asked for more!"

Richard has since sent in pictures of his Prince Albert piercing, and they are included at the bottom of the story.

Actually it's funny in reading a number personal experiences a lot of men are concerned about having sex again and my number one concern was getting back on the bike (yes I am addicted to the sport). The one piece of advice I can give anyone is to be patient and to rest. I think I jumped the gun the first weekend and set myself back. I also probably rushed get back onto my bike and into my workout routine, but that's me."

Rick titles his story "A breeze". he wrote it two weeks after his vasectomy. "Yesterday was funny as hell when I told my wife "I'm off to work, and by the way you need to drop off that specimen bottle on my night stand at the doctors office this morning". I think that was the most embarrassing part of the whole thing."

"Would I do it again? Yes. Would I use a urologist over a GP? Yes. The vas has been good for me. It saved the mrs a trip under the knife (having our kid was a horror story). I was scared to death of the procedure originally, now that it's over it was nothing. I had no side effects at all. I did do my homework beforehand, which involved talking to my Dr. in depth and hitting the docs I work with up for info."

Written two days afterwards and titled "Ouch - that hurt!". He did have problem on the left side, but concludes:- "Looking back, even when I could feel the vas being burned, it wasn't that bad. Its more of a mental thing than a physical thing. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if necessary."

"The decision was not too big a deal. My wife and I do not want more kids, and she has had a variety of complications with other kinds of birth control we've used including an IUD that "went missing". Also after having given birth twice, I feel quite certain that she has done her bit, and it was time for me to step up."

"I want to say how great it is to have THIS particular resource where folks who have been through the procedure(s) can talk about their experiences. Other than the zealous pro / con propaganda that is on the internet, this is real world comments from real world people." The updates were posted a month after the procedure, and after the "All clear" and a year afterwards.

Written ten days later and titled "It's easier than you think guys". After a condom failure Rodney says:- "My primary reason for having a vasectomy was because I lost all faith in using condoms as a secure form of birth control and I wanted to make sure that I did not have a fourth child. I was dreading the possibility of two painful needles directly into the testicles and all of the pain that was supposed to follow. I am happy to report that the whole thing was a breeze."

NSV vasectomy written a day or so later. "All in all, not bad. The worrying was much worse than the actual event. Again, the worst part for me was the nurse working on me - and that is due to my own idiosyncrasies."

Sam is a keen on keeping himself in shape, and his story discusses the procedure, his recovery and how he got back into his fitness regime. "The fear and pain is all psychological. I think the best part is that I feel no different, and my mother-in-law has no clue I had this done. She was on a cruise when it happened, so I just laugh to myself when she asks when I am having the surgery. I might keep her in the dark for a few years."

"The injections were probably the most uncomfortable part. They are a lot like a dentist's injections, however the pressure buildup as the fluid is injected was VERY uncomfortable. It was weird to watch him wrap the silk, with these big arm movements. Just seemed out of place somehow, give the "delicacy" of the procedure"

Uplifting Irish story. "In final, if you have seen your wife give birth - your pain is nothing. The female equivalent is much more painful! Although there are some bad, scary stories here. I am fortunate to have a great doctor and nurse and a supporting wife. Get a good doctor-do it in a hospital and take it easy! Go for it guys-your wife will be VERY grateful!"

"We have a four year-old boy, and though more children might have been nice, we were reluctant to try again. We are both getting close to 40 and my wife had some medical complications that made very pregnancy risky. After our son was born, my wife got quite ill. Luckily, she is fine now. We got lucky once and we are thankful for the son we have.... One of the things that did bother me about nearly all of these web pages with the information against vasectomy is that when you clicked on a link for more information it was almost always dead. Finally I tripped upon www.vasectomy-information.com. Finally! A web site that had some decent information. But best of all, it had the survey! And it had some answers that I was looking for!"

Story written four weeks afterwards. "I feel like I have joined some sort of club. I can honestly say the worst part has been having the hair grow back in. Seriously......this was truly a piece of cake. If you have been thinking about it, stop thinking, and start acting."

At the time of the first part of the story, Steve hadn't yet had his vasectomy. The reason I published the story early was that Steven feels that by doing so, it might help others contemplating a vasectomy at a Kaiser clinic by knowing about their "Vasectomy class". The update is written just after his vasectomy.

Stuart (from England) says his wife was more nervous than he was! "One thing I have noticed is the number of men who own up to having had, or are going to have, a vasectomy once it's mentioned. Mostly it's a taboo subject, after all you're getting you privates cut, but when the ice is broken then men seem to be happy to talk about it."

Tim had the NSV procedure. "Afterward, I experienced very minor discomfort that lasted about two hours. It wasn't a stabbing pain or even a very dull ache. It felt more like a little bit of pressure, but definitely bearable. 400mg of Motrin helped. It's recommended to stay off your feet for 24 hours, but after 4 hours on the couch, I felt fine. If you have any concerns about the pain, don't ignore them, deal with them. It is definitely not what you would think it is."

"I had great support from my wife (who did not force me to do this). We agreed it would be on my terms (we had a friend whose wife scheduled it for him). Men remember to do it for yourself 1st and then for your wife and she will LOVE you for it."

Tom was told that his vasectomy was covered by the insurance company, but they ultimately didn't cough up - he's in the process of disputing this. "I didn't do this for my wife; I did it for me" says Tom.

"On about day 3 quite a large haematoma appeared on my penis. My wife made me sit with a bag of frozen sweet corn on my nuts and take homeopathic remedies (apis mel and arnica). Surprisingly this really helped with the swelling and bruising. Well I have to say that day 12 was the first time I felt really OK. My wife and I managed a 5 mile hike. In retrospect, I have no regrets at having had the procedure and would recommend anyone who is seriously considering it to go ahead."

"I had my vasectomy last night at 6:30 pm. I Know at least 5 other guys who had the procedure. All of whom said it was a painless no big thing. I of course was nervous all day, 6:30 in the evening was a long wait.... Home we went, hung out with the kids. I was waiting for the pain to set in, it never did though. This morning went just as well, no pain, no medication, nothing. I had my first erection which felt kinda weird. I will admit, seeing my girl in her gym attire got me excited enough to temporarily forget about my vasectomy, but I will wait at least a few days."

"I have to say that with all I had read that the no scalpel really does work well and I am very proud and happy to have it done and can hardly wait for the sample count reports. By the way, the doctor told me I was the 2nd oldest person he had performed it on. If anything it has brought my significant other and myself closer together." The update details his feelings upon being given the "All clear".
