"I am writing this hoping it will put some nerves at ease. Let me tell you guys as stated in many of the postings the anticipation and anxiety is the worst part of the procedure. It really is not that bad if I can do it anyone can. I would recommend the no-scalpel procedure and don’t forget to ask for the valium."

Bruce is from Canada. Before his vasectomy he said that "I almost talked myself out of it. But I decided that the risks were not that great". Afterwards he said "The worst part was the dread and worry I put myself through. I think to say it was "painful" is an overstatement. It was mostly uncomfortable."

"I was really nervous and tried to talk myself out of it a couple of times, but I had already told everyone at work that I was having it done, and I did not want to seem like a big chicken. The procedure was not as bad as I expected. I hope this might help someone that is nervous about having it done. It really is no sweat at all."

Dan was nervous, and had an IBS attack just before the procedure was done. "Research, research, research! (But don’t believe everything you read). Find a doctor that is willing to answer your every question and if he doesn't, get a different doctor! Thank you all for helping me through this. The Internet is a very valuable resource and I don't know where I'd be without it." says Dan.

Dan titles his story "Mr. Nervous". He says:- "It is now 4 days after the procedure and I have some bruising and a small amount of discomfort. I would have never believed I would feel so good.If you get anything out of Mr. Nervous's story is that it is not as bad as you may think." The update adds a bit of a twist. Medicines prescribed for a pinched shoulder nerve caused some swelling and bruising. Three weeks later and the positive has gone to a negative, and back to a positive again. Forrest was extremely nervous in the run up to his vasectomy. This story is a compilation of his posts to the newsgroup during those few days, and afterwards. One little anecdote:- "The surgeon checked me and looked at the site. He said "What is your name?" I told him , and he said "And what are we doing this morning? I told him "Penis enlargement, Dr". The whole place howled." The update is when he got the all clear.

"So I made the appointment for the counseling session. I had planned to ask a number of careful, learned questions that would impress the doctor with my medical insight. Instead I ended up sweating through a good shirt I would end up having to wear all day and stammering into my shoes that "yes I was absolutely sure that this was the right decision for me". Not sure about anything at that point, I scheduled the procedure for a full three weeks later and settled down to a new life as a complete nervous wreck......."

Mark has a slightly complex life, and had his vasectomy just prior to the birth of one of his children. "For the past 9 months I've been dreading the moment of my vasectomy. I cant imagine anyone more squeamish than me, (although some of the posts in this web site come pretty close), but anxiety aside, I knew this was something I must do for my own piece of mind. The baby was about to fall out on any given day, and I wanted to be 100% done with this mess and worry free by the time it was born, so I made the appointment for Friday March 22nd 2002......"

"This story (or article, or diary, or whatever you want to call it) chronicles my experiences with a vasectomy performed under a general. There are many debates with respect to whether or not a general is easier. For me I believe a general may have been the right choice."

"I remember driving to the hospital with a friend of mine, on the way to my surgery. He had the procedure done, and he did provide some good info that eased my nervousness. It helped, but not much. Now its 4 days later and I'm doing ok, a little pain every now and then, hurts to sit for a long time. I "tested the waters" and everything worked out great. I would do it again and I do recommend it. All in all not a bad day."

In response to another newsgroup poster, who was extremely nervous one week before his vasectomy Tom said:- "If you've got the appointment made, that shows a good amount of resolve/willpower to start with. I bet you'll get through it fine. I went to see my regular doctor a month or three ago, for a physical and referral for vasectomy (kinda like buying four bags of potato chips along with your condoms, to cover them up at the store!). They decided it'd be fun to take a blood sample for routine testing, and I got faint and sweaty from the blood draw. Took a while to get cooled off enough to walk to my car and drive home...."
